For almost 40 years, Elizabeth Gough’s gentle voice has been a light in the darkness for countless Queenslanders reaching out to Lifeline.
At 92, her unwavering commitment to ensuring no one faces their struggles alone continues to inspire everyone around her.
Known affectionately as ‘Auntie Elizabeth’, she brings a special warmth to every interaction – whether supporting callers through their darkest moments or mentoring new crisis supporters with patience and understanding.
Her wisdom, gained through four decades of dedicated service, helps shape the next generation of volunteers who will carry this vital work forward.
In a country where one in six Australians have experienced thoughts of suicide, the importance of having someone ready to listen cannot be overstated.
Elizabeth understands that breaking the silence and finding connection can be the first step toward hope.
“If you finish your shift and even one person says they feel better or are glad they called today, then you know everything we do here is worthwhile,” Elizabeth shares.
“The courage of the people you talk to reminds you of the incredible resilience people have to face challenges and still find strength to go on.”
Her commitment to creating a safe space where people can speak openly without fear of judgement has helped countless Queenslanders find their voice when they needed it most.
Elizabeth and her fellow volunteers represent a vital message: no one needs to suffer in silence – there is always someone ready to listen and support you, without judgement.
Her dedication shines particularly bright during the festive season, when loneliness and hardship can feel most acute
Elizabeth joins approximately 50 volunteers at the Ipswich centre who ensure that no call goes unanswered throughout Christmas and the new year – a reminder that hope and connection are always available, even in life’s most challenging moments.
Every 28 seconds, someone reaches out to Lifeline – and because of volunteers like Elizabeth, they find a caring voice ready to listen without judgement and offer hope when it’s needed most.
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, Lifeline Queensland can provide comprehensive training for dedicated volunteers like Elizabeth.
