As a lifelong nurse and community carer, Ruth has always understood the importance of being there for people in their moments of need.
In the 1980s, alongside her nursing career, Ruth dedicated her evenings and weekends to supporting Lifeline, inspired by her mother’s work as a trained counsellor at Lifeline.
“Some calls with people in distress I’ve never forgotten and I was aware how special it was to be with people in times of need,” Ruth shared. “I think Lifeline gave me much more than I gave it.”
The skills Ruth gained through Lifeline’s training enhanced both her nursing career and personal life.
“We weren’t there to solve people’s problems, but to let them know that someone cared by really listening and creating a trusted relationship with them,” Ruth shared.
This understanding has stayed with her throughout her life, shaping her approach to caring for others. When she could no longer give her time, Ruth continued her commitment to supporting Queenslanders with her monthly gift to Lifeline.
“By giving monthly, I continue to be part of the Lifeline Queensland family and support those who might be struggling or just need someone to talk to.”
Every 28 seconds, someone contacts Lifeline seeking connection and hope.
By joining The Community Circle, each monthly gift helps ensure no one faces their darkest moments alone. Each monthly gift helps train more crisis supporters and answer more calls for help.
