This is your kindness at work

Recently, we wrote to you about Mat. A beautiful soul, his sister Lauren called him — the funniest personality, the biggest heart, a gift for making the people around him happy.

Mat lost his life to suicide at 39, after 15 long years of struggle. Lauren shared his story so that other families might be spared the same heartbreak.

So that the next person like Mat might find a voice on the line when they need it most.

Lauren and her brother Mat are wearing sunglasses and smiling together for a photo outdoors. Mat has his arm around Lauren.

And the community answered, opening their hearts to give — and in doing so, became part of something that saves lives every single day. Because of people like you, more Crisis Supporters can be trained.

More calls can be answered. More people in their darkest hour can hear the words that can change everything: I’m here, and I’m listening.

Here’s what your community made possible. Together, supporters across Queensland helped fund the training that turns ordinary, compassionate people into Crisis Supporters — each one giving over 170 hours to learn how to sit with someone in crisis and guide them gently back toward hope.

That’s what your kindness builds. Not just a phone line, but a promise. That whenever someone reaches out — by call, by text, by online chat — somebody will reach back.

From every family like Lauren’s, and every person you’ll help through a crisis: thank you.

Earlier this year, we asked what matters most — about why you stand with us. And the answers were honest, generous and deeply moving. What came through, again and again, was belief. In your own words:

“The world is harder now. The gift of listening is even more valuable than ever.”

“Lifeline doesn’t need to be everything. Just there for people in despair. That matters.”

“Our son was contemplating suicide as a teenager. One call to Lifeline gave us calm, kind advice in the moment. He is doing so well now. And it all started with that call.”

That’s what your support protects. The call that comes at the right moment. The calm, kind voice that helps a family find their way through.
